Goal 3 - Model digital-age work, research, collaboration and learning
Example 1: Using Google Docs, I have created a presentation for educators, which is meant to improve Internet Literacy by learning the uses of Boolean Operators. This presentation could easily be adapted to use in a classroom at all levels to teach the same concept. In this presentation, teachers learn about how to search the Internet for information by using the Boolean Operators “and,” “or,” and “not” in their search queries. It is meant to be used at a professional development inservice, and includes a kinesthetic activity that demonstrates how Boolean operators function, information about common Boolean Operators, demonstrations of information searches without the use of Boolean Operators, and an opportunity for teachers to try out what they’ve learned and give feedback. This artifact meets Goal 3 by using technology to support digital-age learning. It does this by modeling how to effectively and efficiently search for information in an online environment. Example 2: I created this artifact, a Lunch DT (Step 1) Spreadsheet Google Doc, as a part of a new school-wide management system that is being implemented this school year, of which I am in charge. Before this document was created, teachers who had students that did not serve their classroom consequence within 3 days of receiving it would email those student names to the assistant principal, who would add them to a list and then email it to the entire staff in the morning. Things became confusing when teachers would send additional emails either taking students name off the list who had served, or adding additional ones, all before the lunch hours arrived. With this document, all staff can access and modify this list as needed, it is no longer one person’s responsibility to manage it, and data can be gathered and analyzed easily to see what interventions may be needed for some students. This artifact meets Goal 3 because it shows how I can use digital tools for collaboration in order to make school-wide management a more effective and efficient task. It also shows how I can use what I know about digital-age work and collaboration to initiate new and better practices within my school. Lunch DT Google Drive Spreadsheet
Example 3: These artifacts are a pamphlet that I created for teachers, called Creating a Classroom Blog, and a wiki page which I shared with staff. I used these artifacts during a staff development meeting that I led, which centered around using blogs in the classroom. At this meeting, I defined blogs and what they are used for, gave rationales for using one to enhance teaching and learning, and modeled how to create a blog. These artifacts meet Goal 3 because they show that I can use what I know about blogs and their educational benefits to encourage others in my profession to create and use them as well.
